Am I alone?
Posted by benoit on 17 Sep 2006 at 11:47 am | Tagged as: embedded, ramblings
One of the reason I decided to start this blog was due to the paucity of blogs related to the field of embedded development. Embedded.com has excellent content, and the columnists are a joy to read, but nothing in the blogosphere!
.NET has news sites like Larkware, it has blogosphere celebrities like Chris Sells , Scott Hanselman, and Larry O’Brien. Roy Osherove is big in both .NET and the Agile community. Talking about Agile, they have their own stars: Ron Jeffries, Robert Martin and the whole bunch at ObjectMentor.
But what about the embedded world? Where are the high profile bloggers? WindRiver, GreenHills, FreeScale, AMCC where are you?

You are not alone. Perhaps the low blog profile is because embedded development leans heavily on corporate commitment and, well, ‘trade secret’. A single web developer can do quite a bit with the help of the ‘community’. But a SW guy, with no hardware, with no protytpe, with no logic analyzer, etc etc has limited impact.
Another factor- workload. I could put ten embedded developers to work tomorrow. Where are they?

Blogging about embedded software development…
Beniot Asks “Am I alone?” when it comes to Blogging about Embedded Software development. He’s talking…
Lawrence,
I completely agree with your point that most embedded development is corporate. I bemoan the death of electronics as a hobby. That being said, it seems to me that there is plenty to write about (industry, trends, tools, etc.) regardless of the way software is developed.
You have also nailed it on the head with your second point. There is more work than (qualified) people. We are also looking for an embedded software person, but being a small company in an out of the way place, the problem is compounded.
You’ve just provided me material for 2 or 3 more entries.
Thanks!
Benoit

Sadly, doing “embedded development blog” still returns few relevant results. Most of the results are related to Microsoft’s embedded development effort. […]
[…] Posted by benoit on 01 Mar 2007 at 10:07 am | Tagged as: embedded, ramblings In one of my early blog post, I was bemoaning the apparent lack of embedded blogs out there. I have finally discovered that I am not alone! Go check out Embedded Gurus! There are some forums, but what has me excited are the bloggers: Michael Barr of Embedded Systems Design fame, Miro Samek, author of Practical Statecharts in C/C++, Larry Mittag, Nigel Jones with great technical content. Do read the article he wrote for Embedded Systems Design on ISR overhead! […]
There does seem to be very few blogs focusing on embedded development in the blogosphere. I’ve recently started one at http://www.embeddedincork.net and have been searching since then to find like minded blogs. One of the issues that I find is that working for a small company limits what I can place on my blog (as I’m concious not to put trade secrets etc. into a public domain). To date I’ve focused more on the local tech scene, but I want to move it towards genuine contributions to the web. This is certainly one blog that I will be keeping an eye on from now on.
